Did you install or uninstall anything prior to this happening?
W98 makes 5 backup copies automatically, & when it has a problem restores the registry from the latest 'clean' backup (ie. one that started windows successfully) have a look at this page http://www.elementkjournals.com/w98/9908/w989983.htm
deal with this first & if you still get illegal operation messages write down the details, I think there is some info on i/o's on above site.

One thing the article left out. You have to have a space between scanreg and /restore. So it should look like this:
scanreg_/restore but with a space in place of the underscore I used here. The space doesn't show up well on here, so I use the underscore instead.
Scanreg works very well, and will save the day from time to time. I've brought computers back to life using it when they would not boot at all, nothing but a black screen. But you have to know something was just installed to be fairly sure scanreg will do it.
Also, if you've been having this problem for a few days you might not have a "good" registry backup any more. Scanreg makes a backup after every successful boot.
Scanreg_/fix is also useful, it repairs the registry. You might try that one first.

Hi Guys,
I tried all of your suggestions and it said that a good registry has been put on the computer but I am still getting the error where it can't find alot of .dll files. Also on this pc I am getting errors when I try to use any program. I believe that the Windows 98 SE is corrupted. Can I just erase the hard drive and start over and reinstall Windows 98? This PC is new and I don't have anything really on it. At this point I just want it to work correctly. Please give me instruction how to erase a hard drive and format it to install Windows 98.

Well, if it doesn't really have any thing on it, and you are not wanting to keep anything that is on it, by all means, repartition (if desired), format and reinstall.....

Diz:You said the pc is "new"...how new? Still under warranty? Are you "reinstalling" the same 98? When we recently purchased a pc from a dealer, we were told that we could not "replace" ME with 98 without invalidating our warranty.
Think lysdexiahad a good idea in your other thread, although there are times that replacing lost or corrupted files with the SFC doesn't work very well. I couldn't replace some corrupted vxd files that way, but did replace them by obtaining them elsewhere and manually replacing them. I can't find one link I had for dll files, but another is topfile (http://www.topfile.com/dll/).

Hey Diz is this a Compaq, HP or Emachine? If not, before you go through the fdisk session (this response from me is sounding like a record skipping):
Boot with the startup disk, no CD-ROM support needed, type c: hit enter then type fdisk /mbr make sure to leave a space before the / then hit enter. Now go through your fdisk session and make your primary partition and any extended dos partitions that you like. Reboot the system after completion of fdisk. Boot again with the startup disk, still do not need CD ROM support, and format your HD. Reboot the system and this type you will need to enable CD ROM support. Drive on with the install.
If you get another error message write it down verbatim for us http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif There are more things to deal with this type of problem, but let's KISS it for now http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I tried you suggestion and that fdisk /mbr does not do anything. Is there anyway I get rid of the errors and registry problems completely even after deleting the hard drive. I'm not concerned about saving anything, I just want Windows 98 to work properly. Please help

Hi Diz http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Sorry to hear about the on-going troubles http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
Possibilities I can think of now are:
The Windows 98 disc is bad (has bad sections somewhere).
The HD has bad sectors.
You need the debug utility to remove the partition.
The fdisk /mbr command doesn't appear to do anything (no further actions or screens etc.) below is an excerpt from here (http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000175.htm) explaining what the command does:
FDISK /MBR is an undocumented Microsoft DOS command available in MS-DOS 5.0 and above. MBR is short for Master Boot Record. When doing FDISK /MBR it will reinstall the first 446 of 512 bytes of information with zeroes effectively rewriting the executable code and data strings that may currently be residing there. The remainder of the 512 bytes is the boot settings which tells the computer how to boot. These settings are left alone.
Here (http://www.computerhope.com/fdiskhlp.htm) is another link from that site discussing fdisk.
Here (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q255/8/67.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=fdisk%20mbr&rnk=24&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=MSALL) is the MS link discussing fdisk.
And lastly, this (http://www.advsys1.com/hddctr.htm) link will offer the MS-DOS debug utility to remove partitions when fdisk fails. Look for Partition Remover.
I hope one of these helps you http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Bass,
I can access fdisk, but I tried to delete the drive and then reinstall Windows but the registry errors continue to come. Is it possible that the drive is not being completely erase leaving the errors on the hard drive? As you can imagine, I am trying everything to resolve this....

Yes Diz, I think something is hanging around, but don't rule out the other possibilities (mentioned in my last post & the possibility that something is happening during the install...power supply flutters or mobo batt is weak...I'm grasping at straws here). That is why I suggested the partition remover as opposed to the very last action of a low-level format. There should be nothing left of the old registry after fdisk...unless this comp is one of those we have talked about in the forums where the first sectors of the HD are actually comprised of vendor data...that is why I suggested fdisk /mbr in hopes it would erase (recreate) the master boot record). The debug utility, first mentioned here by Reid I believe, that should even remove that extra crud (if there) by a vendor.
I will do some more searching with the exact error message.
Edit: I just saw this (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q193/9/03.asp) in the MSKB. Should not be the prob now since all the fdisk'ing and formatting you've done.

I'm getting a message when I reinstall windows that says Setup (.CAB) File Error - Setup has detected the following decoding error 'Setup has detected a corrupt Setup (.CAB) file'. Setup will attempt to recover from this situation. Click to continue. The message keeps popping up when I go to continue. Trying to install Windows 98 First Edition. What should I do?
Also received a Regsvr32 error that says: REGSVR32 caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 015f:bff7b997.

Try cleaning the cd drive, the cd and maybe copying the .cabs to the hard drive...it sounds like you may have a problem with the cd.

Should I just get another hard drive? Is it worth trying to fix all the registry problems with the one I have? Still haven't been able to get it working.

OK, if this is a new computer, and one you didn't build yourself, it should still be under warranty. The first thing to do in that case is take it back. Keep taking it back till they fix or replace it.
If you want to do it yourself, it should have come with a restore CD, use it.

After you format type at C:\>MD WIN98cd "ENTER"
then type CD WIN98cd "ENTER"
It should say C:\WIN98cd (or somthing like this)
C:\WIN98CDCOPY E:\WIN98"ENTER" Make sure to space between copy and E
(COPY E:\WIN98 "ENTER"
If it loads your windows files, take the CD out of your ROM and type "SETUP" "ENTER"
