Safeguarding PC from VIrus

Hi,
My PC gets attacked by virus frequently mainly because of my USB drives & some unwanted mails.

Kindly suggest me some free antivirus & some other utilities to protect my system.Also suggest whether I can purchase any Original Antivrus for my PC ?

Only my brother is using my PC for some basic activities !

I use Avast,seems ok.
Tell your brother to get his own PC or account or he could install his own drive in yours.
