My sister asked me to have a look at her daughters “Advent notebook”, I couldnt find the model, it’s one of them little small 10 inche screen units with 1 GB of ram, with a 160 HDD running XP home. Anyway it won't boot and displays File: \Boot\BCD Status: 0xc000000f
With the words: - Insert your windows installation disc...
These notebooks don't come with an installation disc, plus there’s no CD Rom either way. So how on earth do I get an operating system installed?
I’ve searched the net and there seems to be a lot of people with this problem, but there dosent seem to be a solution. Is there anyway that XP could be copied onto a USB stick then installed this way? Any help would be appreciated.

What you will have to do is get or build an external CD/DVD and attach via USB and boot that way.
Get one of these:
http://images10.newegg.com/ProductImage/17-366-023-02.jpg $21.99 from Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817366023&cm_re=external_drive_enclosure-_-17-366-023-_-Product)
Throw in a used CD/DVD and attach via USB. Set the bios to boot to the USB & you are good to go...

I can see where you are coming from. Just out of curiosity though, could I somehow connect a second HDD via a Docking station, or would an operating system have to be installed on the notebook for it to see the External HDD or am I over complicating things here?

You are over complicating this. Boot from a CD & do your thing...

Update
I have finally installed the new XP operating system, and handed it back to my sister who now tells me the damn thing won't connect to the net.
Maybe Ive missed something, after a bit of thought I should have tried to connect when I had it here, anyway I beleive a wireless driver needs installing, where would I find a driver to fit? (assuming I'm on the right track)

Are you sure the Netbook had XP installed since "File: \Boot\BCD Status: 0xc000000f" sounds much more like a Vista or Win7 Operating System Error?
If there is a problem with a device (typically no drivers) there is usually a yellow exclamation mark showing it up in Device Manager. The drivers for any relevant hardware should be downloadable from somewhere; which make and model of Advent is in question.
A number of these netbooks have a recovery partition that can restore the PC to its factory state.

Yeah definetly XP. Ive given the note book back so just waiting for more details on the make and model.
I tried hard to get to the recovery partition but it wouldn't have it.
using UID (http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html) while hardwired to the internet will get the drivers that you need. if you have a bit of money, getting something easier like Driver Genius would be simpler, but it's also more expensive (I think I got mine a long time ago for like 10 dollars on sale when it's usually 30...) If you think you found a good one, read the reviews on the app before buying or downloading it the two I mentioned aren't the only ones, but the first one is free. XD
