HI, I'M HAVING TROUBLE DEFRAGMENTING MY HARD DRIVE. EVERY TIME I TRY TO DEFRAGMENT IT, IT WILL CHECK FOR ERRORS AND AND KEEP DOING IT WITHOUT ADVANCING. I RAN SCANDISK FOR WINDOWS AND DID A STANDARD CHECK WITH NO PROBLEMS, BUT THE THOROUGH CHECK WOULD KEEP RESTARTING, EVEN THOUGH I WASN'T RUNNING ANY PROGRAMS AT ALL. THEN I TRIED DEFRAGMENTING MY HARD DRIVE AND IT WOULD KEEP RESTARTING AND NEVER GOT PAST 10%. PLEASE, IF YOU CAN HELP ME OR IF THERE'S ANYTHING YOU OR I NEED TO KNOW, TELL ME SO. I HAVE A 60GB HD, NOT SURE WHAT THE MAKE IS

You don't say what you're running Win98/95 but the first thing to do is try running defrag in safe mode. If that doesn't do it then you can use Ctrl Alt DEl and close all programs except explorer and systray, especially any anti-virus software.
I also have found that the version of defrag that comes with WindowsME is far faster than any previous version and was the only version that completed a defrag on my notebook with some esoteric network programs loaded. You can download that version at ZDNet "I think" and just rename defrag.exe in the windows directory to _defrag.exe and put the new defrag.exe in it's place.
If not at ZDNet or Microsoft post back and I'll email it to you it's only about 250kb.

HI GRIFFIN SPC
COULD YOU MAIL IT TO saliva15@hotmail.com PLEASE? I'VE TRIED RUNNING SCANDISK IN SAFE MODE WITH NO PROGRAMS RUNNING, BUT IT KEPT RESTARTING. THE FIRST TIME IT SEEMED LIKE IT WAS WORKING, AND GOT PAST 10% BUT RESTARTED SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, NOT SURE HOW FAR IT WAS AS I WASNT ON THE COMPUTER. I TRIED IT TODAY AGAIN AS ABOVE AND IT FROZE AT 10% WHEN I GOT BACK ABOUT 3 HOURS LATER.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME
