I was trying to replace an old hard drive.
I had read an article that said to set the old
drive as slave, the new drive as master and
then there were a couple of lines of commands
(I know there are programs available to do this,
but i wanted to try from a dos prompt)
When I re-powered the computer, received an error
message that read hard disk controller failure.
I put the old drive back as master, disconnected
the new drive, and re- powered the computer...
same error message! How can I get this machine
running again? maybe I need to forget trying
to replace, it just a learning project anyway!

Could be one of five problems.1. not connected properly [2].drive not set up properly [3].Bad hard drive [4].hard disk drive cable [5]bad mobo or interface board?

system specs could help here::

does the bios support "AUTO"
??IDE or EIDE??--are jumpers set properly

Make sure the cables are good &( post back)

Did ya defrag
