HP Pavilion won't boot to Safe Mode

I'm working on a HP Pavilion zv6000 laptop for a friend and trying to boot to Safe Mode (Win XP installed). I tap F8 like crazy on reboot but it doesn't boot to Safe Mode. Any ideas?

what does it do? does it boot normally then? does it crash? freeze? and do you know what the problem is that you need to boot to safemode for?

Start
Run
msconfig

Then set the SAFEBOOT checkbox as per the illustration. (No good obviously if you cant get in in normal mode).

The inability to get in is usually due to a faulty or inappropriate keyboard, timing of the keypress, wrong BIOS settings or to a failing hard drive
