I'm getting a new PC desktop, HP h8t series with 12 or 16GB of memory to run Photoshop Elements 9, along with Capture NX2, & Silver Efex (All at the same time). Oh, getting the i5 processor, no video editing need.

Q: Which Windows 7 version should I get? Home or Professional?

Thanks

Do you want to join a Domain? If so, Windows 7 Pro is what you need.

Windows 7 Home Premium is ok for home use.

Windows 7 Enterprise is pointless in a home environment. Moreover, and more importantly, it's available only as a volume license product. Home Premium should suffice in this instance.

Definitely Pro if you go for 16GB or may want 16GB or more of ram in the future. 7 Home only supports 16GB. Minus memory addresses for video card/s etc, and 7 Home won't even be able to see the full 16GB. Say you get a video card with 4GB memory, 16-4=12GB that windows will be able to see, you will have wasted 4GB system memory. Say you end up with 2x 4GB cards in XFire/SLI, 16-8=8GB usable memory. This is not an issue with 7 Pro. 8 standard does not have this issue.

Once we hit the 12 or so GB mark for memory and 3-4GB video cards 7 home is useless. 7 Pro, 8 standard and up support up to 128GB.

If you will never use a dedicated video card, either gaming card or a workstation card, and go for only 12GB memory, then 7 Home would be fine.
