Yes i know if you have one drive , with two os's, you have to set the partition in dos to active. However isnt that a hassle? Doesnt like a program called partition magic, do a better job of this? If so , do you have to have it partition , and formated with partition magic for it to do its job, or can you just like pop it in there and will take those partitions(that you did in dos) and do its job?

Hi diurnal,
Partitoning, setting active, and formatting only need to be done once when you are first loading an OS. So as for it being a hassle, I don't know. Maybe for some. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
I preferr to just use a windows start disk and use Fdisk. It works. Its simple. And its free.
One of the nice things about Partition magic is the ability to go into an already setup machine and create a partition on free space. Something you cannot do with Fdisk.
Partiton magic will work from a blank drive or you can modify existing partitions. I think you can even work with different file systems (FAT,FAT32,NTFS,ext2) but I am not positive on that.
Hope this helps

Yep Bassman - You are correct. Its what I use. The drawback with Fdisking is that it deletes everthing and you cannot alter unless you wipe the drive. Whereas Partition Magic allows you to do everthing from within windows. Resizing partitions as well

If you don't have access to W2000, then partition magic is a handy item-and yes the newest version ( 6.0 ) will suport all Windows file systems and even the linux file system.

There is a free partition manager called Ranish Partition Manager (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,6170,00.asp) that is just as good as Partition Magic.

As i stated above, if you have W2000-it has a built in drive manager that will allow you to create/delete partitions, even create up to 3 active partitions, or assign any drive letter you like-even have a partition without a driveletter, things FDISK won't do.

If you wait a couple of weeks I think Partition Magic 7 will be getting released, or it might already be on the market.
