We recently purchased a hardware/external modem for my husband's puter. We're in the process of troubleshooting..getting errors..but when he is able to access the Net and surf, he's having similar difficulties to what he had before in terms of sluggish and so forth. We have recently acquired the complete IE 5 with installer and service packs, so my question is this: can we just uninstall IE 5.5, and then install IE 5? When we uninstall 5.5, will we just be going back to the "root" IE that came with 98..version 4.something? Will we be causing Registry messes? He has already tried the 5.5 repair option...no change.

It sounds as if it could be two separarte but related problems....configuration with the modem itself and possible DUN(or IE) configuration as opposed to an actual problem IE. Here (http://808hi.com/56k/) is a site to try to help iron out some of the modem difficulties....try and get that cleaned up first. Then see if there is a configuration problem with IE or DUN.

Will do..just came back from exploring that site. Wow..comprehensive and lots of things to check. Thanks. But I was also asking the uninstall/install question for someone else having problems with 5.5 working properly. Can one do what I asked without making huge messes, or is one stuck with whatever version they have? ...unless upgrading to the next version.

The $64,000 question....IF they kept the backup that IE5.5 made then the chances of successfully going back are greater...if not http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif , basically any time you install/uninstall something that is as tightly interwoven with the OS as IE is you are asking for potential problems...but the only why to really find out if it is going to work is to try it...on any given system it could work very well, I just haven't figured out why...one time several months ago I rolled back to 5.01 with out any problems but once before...it was a real mess (same machine....)and after the rollback the second time I installed 5.5 it has been an absolute charm...no problems.

mjc : Backup? What backup...lol. If I made a backup installing 5.03, I sure never knew about it. Thanks, though, that's what I thought because of the many changes made to System files. We may give it a try (even so) on my husband's puter as soon as we finish troubleshooting the modem. My husband's gonna be ticked...I couldn't get online this morning, and called our ISP and the tech said they've been experiencing "difficulties" for the last two days..pretty much the same time period he's been working on the modem.

Yoda : I think trying to install 5.5 "over" 6 might cause similar problems. Hopefully, you won't want to go back...but geebee and Buck recently found this site (http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/support/win95/msiexpl.html)for me, and it has 5.5 with service pack 1. Says they will have 5.5 with service pack 2 and the installer in the future. I am suffering from "cable envy" at the moment. My son downloaded IE 5 for me..said it took "about 10 minutes". Sniff.

To my limited knowledge you can only uninstall IE if it is an upgrade (through ADD|ROMOVE programs) from a previous version. You cannot uninstall IE if it is the version that was installed when you installed windows.
One thing you could try is "Windows Lite" I think this DOES allow you to uninstall IE and leave windows in a much more stable condition. Using this, uninstall existing IE, and then install the version you want. Also lets you operate windows without the cumbersom monstrosety called Internet Explorer http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif . I have never tried it but I have been told that it is really quite good. Go to the following link " http://www.98lite.net/ " Good luck and let me know if it works
