In my first request for assitance on how to get my system to report the proper amount of RAM, I didn't give much detail about my computer.
My computer has a AMD K6-2 500MHZ and I am running windows 98 V 4.10
Problem: Have 64 MB RAM but system reports 56MB.
Thanks again

Do you have a built in video card that shares your RAM for video memory?

Great catch hired goonz, i seen some motherboards that i have put 128 ram in and it only shows up like 114.And they have onboard video on them, that would explain everything. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Thanks for this. Sounds like the problem is with video memory sharing with SDRAM.
Is this normal, I mean is there something that I can do about it or do I have to live with it.

Shared video memory is something you need to live with as long as you use a board with onboard video. The reason it doesn't register in Windows is that the physical RAM has already been assigned to the video (the same thing would happpen if you set up a RAMDRIVE (a method of using memory like a disk drive), it wouldn't be seen by Windows.

If you want a better vid card, you could buy a PCI card and use it instead of the onboard...then if you disable the onboard card, you should get (most of) the memory back. You may need to go into the BIOS and adjust how much memory is assigned to the onboard card...
Even if you do this, it may not give the memory back to windows, or it may not give all of it back...Intel's 810e mobo will give back all but 1mb, and other boards may only free up the smallest setting available for the card...

here are the specs for your pc, and the only thing you can do about it is to disable onboard vid, install a real card (independant)as described above by my learned colleagues!!
Compaq Presario 7480 System Memory - 64MB 100 MHz SyncDRAM, 2 total DIMM slots upgradable to 512MB (SyncDRAM DIMM required)- 8MB dedicated for video memory.
there's why.
seems this was a DOUBLE POST.
Please, in the future have a bit of patience when asking a question, we will get to it. Posting twice only serves to cause confusion, and is redundant........... as well as annoying.
