After a storm, my brother in law lost the internet. Here is what we got:

1 laptop - both wire and wireless
2 Pc wire only
3 linksys wireless router
4 DSL modem.

The laptop can plug right into the modem and connect to the internet no problems.

The PC says no cable detected.
The laptop can connect to the router either wire or wireless, however the router cannot connect to the internet.

I tried resetting the router and modem. I set all settings to default. I even tried my own router and nothing will connect to the internet. I am not sure if DSL needs some settings I am missing. All I do is type in the user name and password and try to connect. Both routers work on my cable modem.

For the PC. I uninstalled the NIC drivers and reinstalled. Nothing. I put in a brand new NIC and still nothing. It still says there is no cable installed even in the new NIC. I don't want to format but I am not sure what to do next.

The PC says no cable detected.

Possibly a silly question, but are you using the same Cat-5 cable for the PC to connect to the modem that you're using for the laptop? If not, use the same cable you used to connect the laptop, as it might be a duff cable.

The laptop can connect to the router either wire or wireless, however the router cannot connect to the internet.

Since you said you have to enter a username and password for your ISP, this is generally for a PPPoE (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/P/PPPoE.html) connection, so you would have to set this up in your router. You didn't mention which model of router you have, but have a look at this page (http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=3687) to see if it'll help.

When troubleshooting network problems like this, start at the lowest layer and work up.

Layer 1 (Physical): Is the cable plugged in at both ends? Try a new cable.
Layer 2 (Link): Are you getting link lights on the router and computer?
Layer 3 (Network): Is the router getting an IP address?
Layer 4 (Transport): Can you access the web management console? Can you ping google.com? Try a traceroute from the command prompt (tracert www.google.com) and see where it is failing. Also try a DNS lookup of Google, as that may be the issue too (nslookup www.google.com).

If you can access the router configuration, you will need to set up the PPPoE settings as LochLomonder suggested. Hope that helps

I have to agree with azzey, physical things first before the digital stuff.

Haven't seen Kobaltic in almost a month. I wonder if the problem has been resolved?
