Pete made mention of a Win loading process where the CAB files were loaded on the HDD.

Most curious about this. When I first purchased a computer for my business about 5 years ago the company that built them for us had apparently done something similar. I seem to remember a corrupt file on a computer I purchased for my children and I needed to put in the Win95 disk. Supposedly there was a way to replace just that one corrupted file without reloading the whole OS. There was supposed to be an option after the WIN95 CD was inserted, however, that option was not one I could see from the choices.

I never had to replace a corrupted file from my office computer, but I seem to remember a conversation with the tech-support saying that I would be able to replace without having to use the disk because I could access from my HDD. Sounds to me like the scenario Pete was referring to.

Would this be a handy way to do Win OS installs being able to replace corrupted files from "within."

Adding the Windows cab files to the Hard drive is easy.
All you need to do is create a directory/folder on the hard drive before running setup.
Then Copy the contents of the win98 folder on the cd to the new folder on the hard drive.

Then Just run setup from that folder.
If you already have win98 installed and Just want to stophaving to insert the disk into the cd-rom drive.

All you need do is create the directory and copy the win98 contents into the folder.
When win98 asks for the disk.
Use the browse option and point it to that folder.

You can also edit the register or use one of the programs available to tell windows the location of the cab files in the new folder

Whyzman you would be better loading them onto a partition if you have one then changing the registry to point towards it as RICK suggests. This way if you ever have to format your "C" drive & re-install every thing is on HDD making for faster installation
