View Full Version : Cannot Print Internet in Color
Can only print in black & white from the Internet. Everything else prints fine in color. Have double and tripled checked printer properties and settings. Doesn't matter if I select a small amount of text or print the entire page it only comes out in black & white. A problem only when printing something from the Internet. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Hi adj, Welcome to the Forum.
Some specs will be needed to help find a solution.
What is the printer make and model?
What is your OS?
Which browser and what version are you using?

Under Tools (IE browser), Internet Options, Advanced tab, down the list is Printing and underneath it says "Print background colors and images". Is it checked in that box? Mine isn't checked (and prints color Web pages fine)..but off the top of my head, can't think of anywhere else to look. We do need to know which OS and which browser you are using.

I would try what kay said first then if that doestnt work , then uninstall the printer software and reboot. Then reinstall the software that came with it . Also check the manufaturer site and see if there are any issues about this problem.

Actually I'm helping a friend (he's 84 yr old) who is just learning about PCs and I've got to go over to his house this week to get the details you requested. I know it is a HP printer, a 600 series I think. He is using Windows 98SE for the OS and IE as his browser but I'm not sure which version. I'll find out and post more information. I really appreciate the help as I want things as perfect as possible for him. Thanks again.

adj: Also check HP's website for a newer driver. I remember downloading a driver for a friend aways back for that same "series". Think hers was something like a 640, but can't remember.
I don't know which version of IE comes with 98se, but the version 4 something that came with 98 was pretty feeble so if your friend is going to surf, you might check into either getting a 5.5 from MSN or downloading 5 from Here (http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/support/win95/msiexpl.html). That link has a download with the installer so that you don't to worry about staying online to install it. I have 98 and was using an HP 540 with it and IE 5 for a few months (before buying a newer printer with dual cartridges) and had no difficulties. And IE 5 has never given me any problems either.
Please post back if we can help with anything. My uncle is 78 and I personally think the older ones are much to be commended for learning some of this stuff..and shouldn't have to deal with puter glitches.
Edit: Don't forget to check in Safe mode and remove any "extra" printers and such...in fact, probably better to remove all printer stuff before installing newer driver or reinstalling from a disk. When I first learned about ghosts..I went into Safe mode and discovered two printers (the old one and the new one) and two CD-Roms, and two CD-RW's. Ghosts everywhere in Device Manager!

Dear KayofCircles,
Thanks for the additional information - will do. Called my friend this morning but believe he is out examining an assisted living possibility.
I agree with you that the older folks shouldn't have to put up with these "little" things and are to be commended for their extraordinary efforts. This guy has more where-with-all than a lot of younger folks I know. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again.

My friend's is using an HP 697C printer, IE 5.5 and Win '98 (not Second Edition). We did as suggested (Under Tools (IE browser), Internet Options, Advanced tab, down the list is Printing and underneath it says "Print background colors and images". Is it checked in that box? Mine isn't checked (and prints color Web pages fine)..but off the top of my head, can't think of anywhere else to look. He says he is going to throw his current printer in the garbage and buy another one. Any suggestions before he trashes it? We haven't uninstalled and reinstalled the printer software yet because he is having catarac surgery today and will be incapacitated for 2 - 3 days. Thanks.
