I've got 3 computers sharing an Internet connection on a BEFSR41 Router,
#1 & #2 on WIn 2000, 3# on Win 98SE. #1 is server to an FTP, so I don't want to mess up any setting. That was the easy part...now for the part I need help with. I want to get all 3 computers to see each other and be able to transfer files between them. I don't have a ghost of an idea of what I need to do to accomplish this. Can any one help me and get me started. I've read until I'm blue in the face and nothing makes any sense. Anybody got any simple instructions...sort of?
Thanks

The network protocols are the most important thing. The basic ones are NetBEUI, IPX/SPX. Also have the same logon family and you'll need to turn file sharing on.

That, and we just had one similar to this. It had to do with the IP's of the sharing machines being entered into Win2K if I remember correctly.
Hang in there and I'll bet the one with the complete answer will be on after dinner, or breakfast...depending on what side of the sphere they abide. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Actually isn't IPX/SPX for Novell networks 4.xx and lower? Microsoft machines should have NetBeui and TCP/IP. NetBeui is not routable and thus wont move between router ports. Havent worked with routers much but pretty sure this revolves around the TCP/IP protocal suite.

Do I or Don't I need 2 NIC cards to accomplish this?

I know you have read and read. but check this site it's pretty simple once you decide the way you want it set upSetting up the network (http://www.hildrum.com/network2.html)
I believe you only need one card if I'm reading this right.

I know this is pretty basic but once you put file file sharing on, you need to set on each drive's sharing attributes

OK File and Printer Sharing has a check mark beside it in Win 2000 I have a hard drive that's shared. What protocols do I need? Is there a web page that shows you step by step and explains everything? This must be fairly simple to do because if it was hard I could of done it by now.

Best I can do is post a few links. Think I mihgt have a couple more on my site, it's recently been moved, by the way, to get rid of the Geocities "pop-under" ad they recently implemented.

Basic Network Sharing (http://www.dslreports.com/pictures)
Install MS Network (http://www.helmig.com/j_helmig/mspc2pct.htm)
Internet Connection Sharing (http://www.helmig.com/j_helmig/icsw98se.htm) another page from the previous site.
Matrox Networking 101 Guide (http://www.matrox.com/netweb/solutions/guide2.htm)

Maybe those will help. If not, try Google (http://www.google.com)

Enable file sharing for each PC on the network after you do that when you right click on any hard drive in windows explorer it should give the option to share that drive don't enable file sharing for the NIC with the internet connection if you do your shared drives can be read and wrote to from the internet
I use TCP/IP for intranet and internet

Hello Termite,
I am hopeing Petes links have helped you out. If not I have a Q for you.
On this network, is there a need for security over individual users? (the main purpose of Win2000)
If not I recommend you read the help file in 2000 and set this up as a Peer to Peer network. As previously stated, be sure you have TCP/IP(for internet routing) and Netbeui protocals installed.
With 2000 you can go to the level of which keys somebody can use while working on a specific document. Basicly anything below a shared drive or folder will be accessable unless you go in and say otherwise. You must share each device you want access to over the network.
Last, Each machine MUST have a different name. All machines MUST have the same workgroup name. It does not matter what the names are as long as you follow this rule.
Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hi Bassman,
Sorry I haven't been in for a day or so, I work the weekends.
All machines have the same Workgroup name, and each machine has it's separate name. The only protocol I have so far is the TCP/IP, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks and Client for Microsoft Networks. Each machine has only one Ethernet card. I haven't really had time to play with it for a couple of days because of trouble with the router trying to reset it self. I think I found out what was wrong I had been fooling round with the Ethernet card a week ago and never put a screw in so it had started working it's self loose. Well I hope that's what it was. By the end of the night I should know for sure.
I'll get to this thing tomorrow afternoon probably and Ill get back to you.
Thanks for everyone's help.
