Hi, all! I'm trying to free up some memory on my PC by removing some programs from the systray. OK, I should probably know how to do this, but I don't. What's more, I can't find any resources on how-to. Could someone explain how/why certain programs are started automatically, and how to change it? Thx.

The software starts each time because the software company wants it to (usually). Most of them that are running don't have to. Look at each one closely and you can probably realize what it is, but be sure before you check the box and save and exit.

To stop programs from starting when you start your computer click start-->run-->type msconfig-->click ok-->select startup tab-->uncheck the probrams you dot't want to start when you bootup your PC BE CAREFUL WHICH PROGRAMS YOU STOP FROM RUNNING don't stop SYSTEM TRAY (WINDOWS WON'T RUN) or your av And firewall also might want to keep scan registry load power profile *state mgr(ME) scheduling agent(ME)Explorer is another program you want to leave running but you can't stop it from there.
You Can stop all of the optional programs from Msconfig but most of the required programs can't be stoped.

here's a list of things you can drop or keep you can drop anything you like the only thing systray does is keep your clock running and the items in your systray.

Yoda, nice link. Have seen a few lately and never look at them.

Dazed, as you can tell, it really is a personal preference. There is litteraly nothing on that menu that you have to keep running in order to have your computer work, (yes, including Systray).
Some programs need their settings changed to prevent them from turning themselves back on at startup. Realplayer is one, that, every time you turn it on, it reseats itself in startup. That can be changed in preferences.
As for A.V. and firewall, if you are online alot, it might be wise to leave them in startup. If not, what good are they? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
