Just got my Vantec P3-5030 heatsink in today. I need a little help on installing it correctly. The following questions refer to these two pics (click on the links):
Pic 1 (http://www.et.byu.edu/~azonic/vantec_1.JPG)
Pic 2 (http://www.et.byu.edu/~azonic/vantec_2.JPG)

*In pic 1, WHAT IS that little white square? Do I remove it before installing? If it's to uncover some pre-applied thermal stuff, do I want to clean it off since I'll be using Artic Silver II?

*In pic 2, what is the BLACK braket for? Where does it go? I know the SILVER clip thing is to hold the heatsink to the processor, BUT DO I clip it on CONCAVE UP or CONCAVE DOWN?

*Also, I've read the articles on using a CASE SCREW to remove the old Intel heatsink pins, but I've also heard some people crushing the core when they did this!:dead: WILL heating up the heatsink w/ a blowdryer help soften up the paste that's already there and help PREVENT THIS? Any other pointers on removing the old heatsink would be helpful.

*ONE more thing: WHERE should I place the CPU TEMPERATURE probe? (I will be getting an Asus P2T-Cable (http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1281402150&r=0&t=0&showTutorial=0&ed=1002722998&indexURL=0&rd=1) that hooks right into the mobo)

Hello A,
I will answer what I can.
The white square is preinstalled thermal tape. From what I have seen here lately, that would be preferred to the paste. If there is a thin-peeloff layer, you should remove that so the tape bonds to the chip.
The black bracket looks like a SEC type processor bracket. Maybe you would use this one instead of factory to provide extra support for heatsink.
The silver clip I am not sure of, but if it holds either way, then I would say "It doesn't matter"
Sorry, can't help on using case screws for the removal of the old, or the Temp probe. The probe should come with placement instructions. The old paste should not be that firmly bonded. I have never experienced one that sticky, so I don't want to advise. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Wrong! always use the paste over the tape! Sorry Bass, but looks like you misunderstood the postings on thermal adhesives and CPU's; the thermal paste will always provide much better conductivity than tapes do.

The white tab you see looks like where the heatsink clip ( the silver thing ) goes; at least that's what they are on PII's-haven't really fooled with slot1 PIII's much, hold on and someone more famaliar with these CPU'sshould be along shortly.
