I have an oldass Dell inspiron laptop which recently developed a problem - the CPUFAN doesn't spin at all, the machine ends up overheating and eventually BSODing. Apart from the fan problem, the rest of the system is working normally.

-The fan itself is working and is clean. I took the laptop apart and powered the fan from an external 8V DC source and it's spinning happilly.

-When the computer powers up, the fan doesn't jolt slightly as in desktop computers. It seems that the hardware that is controlling that fan isn't supplying power to the fan at all.

-Cleared CMOS memory, the problem persists. The fan doesn't spin even when "power saving" features are turned off in BIOS.

I can use the computer for CPU-light tasks such as Solitaire because the CPU passively cools itself, but that's obviously not a solution.

Is there anything I can do to this thing to make it work (short of putting it out of its misery?) :)

With the laptop open, power on with the fan disconnected...then using a multimeter make sure you are getting voltage at the pins it connects to.

And...

If it is taking 8V to spin it, then it could be your problem, because I believe most laptop cooling fans are designed to run at 5V....
