View Full Version : File move to aid Disk defrag?

I have a partition on one of my disks that contain some huge image files (backups of other partitions). Some of these image files are 2GB.

Disk defrag seems to take for ever to defrag that partition.

I have a lot of disk space. If I moved these huge files to another partition and moved them back, would this be equivalent to defragging?

It seems like it should be.

A large file on a partition of large files shouldn't see that much fragmentation anyway, if the first one was saved to the partittion and left in place it shouldn't fragment, and so on...so yeah if there is fragmentation (it is almost impossible not to have a little...like maybe 1%). It should work to move them to somewhere else (as long as what is left has been defragmented) and move them back. I have a partition that I store my downloads (.zips and whatnot) on and it is hardly ever above 2% and that only after I have been moving stuff around, if add some stuff to it it doesn't get fragmented.
