microsoft synch center pops up in the processes, freezing the keyboard and mouse functions for 2-4 seconds. it all started when i ran a boot-time defrag using IObit's smartdefrag. i started watching the processes for the problem and found it froze on mobsync's start and memory fluctuation. i looked on howtogeek for an answer but i couldn't disable it with the instructions it gave.

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/8668/what-is-mobsync.exe-and-why-is-it-running/

i have windows vista home premium service pack 1 (recently reformatted drive to rid the problem, used recovery partition, no success). geeksquad have not charged their diagnose fee on me, but he said the hard drive was incredibly slow and dying, which doesn't appear to be the case from my perspective since it only takes 2 minutes from boot to windows login.

should i give up, back pictures and documents up again and get the vista recovery disk or can i use the command prompt to disable mobsync.exe?

I will let others comment about the mobsync.exe. Please post your system specs first.

If the GeekSquad said your hard drive is dying, you should definitely back up your files (you should anyway). Two minute boot time is slow (mine is 19 seconds) but that doesn't necessarily mean the drive is dying. Can you hear any abnormal sounds? You could try running a diagnostic utility to be sure.

soo i may have overdone it but at least you know the inner workings of my computer. no abnormal sounds. no odd sparks flying out. everything's backed up to an external hard drive. i recently cleaned out the dust with compressed air but that was after it started seizing.
