Is there a reliable way to copy DVD's onto a cd-r, analogous to the copying of cd-roms & music cd's?

I know one of my friends have taken this task on. He made it work on his cpu but it would not work in a dvd player(for home). He had to do alot of editing to get everything right like making the sound mesh with the dvd. I would go dvdr, its sound like it would be a big hassle to make it work. But others probablly have better ideas, but just wanted to tell you what i know.

To copy a movie to cdr, you have to convert it into a highly compressed video format...the one that has become famous is mpeg4 (using the DivX codec)
It is extremely time consuming (mostly for your computer) for a 2 hour movie, you're looking at 6 hours+ at a minimum for the conversion using a 1Ghz machine...
When you're done, you'll have an avi file that can be played back on a computer 300mhz or faster with at least 4mb of video memory (although, depending on the options selected during encoding, you may need a much faster system to deliver smooth playback)
To be able to play a copy of a movie in a regular dvd player, you would need to convert to the vcd format, this allows about 45 minutes of "vhs-quality" video and sound to be put on a cdr...so you'd need at least 2 cdrs for any movie...
