Does anyone know anything about installing the System Policy Editor (POLEDIT.EXE) for Win 98. I installed it on my computer sometime ago, but when I reformatted my harddisk I, of course, lost it. I tried to install it again today but had a problem. The instructions from Microsoft on how to install it is to put in your Win98 CD and go to the TOOLS\RESKIT\NETADIM\POLEDIT folder where you will find all the necessary files to install it. You can either click on the installation file or go through Control Panel in the ADD/REMOVE Programs. I tried it both ways but got a message that said "Can not find C:\WINDOWS\INF\COMMON.ADM. I then did a search on my harddrive to look for the file, and the file (common.adm) is not on my system.
I don't understand why I could install it before but now it tells me that it can't find a file that it needs. I looked on my OEM CD to see if the file is there, but it's not. Would appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this. Thanks

I went hunting through my c:\windows\inf folder and low it was there! It seems to be just a plain text file with a strange extension...so you can make it fire up notepad and put this text in (I don't know if it has to be exact so copy and paste):

CLASS MACHINE

CLASS USER

[strings]

and then save it as: common.adm

You may have to go in and rename it to remove the text extension when you are done, then put in the inf folder.

Thanks, mjc--that information did help. After I made that file and tried to install the Policy Editor, I got a message that told me it could not find C:\WINDOWS\INF\WINDIWS.ADM So I did a search for that file and found it on my WIN98 CD. I copied that file to the ADM folder and everything worked OK. And--would you believe it--the file COMMON.ADM was also on that CD with exactly the same text that you mentioned in your answer. These computers sure have a mind of there own. Have a good day. I'm going to go and finish watching the ball game on TV.

Check in in Explorer view -> folder options -> and make sure that you don't have the "Hide file extensions for known file types" box checked...it probably had a double extension....adm.txt. That will also add a little security to your system...many virus and trojan files have double extensions, something like xxx.jpeg.vbs.
