I have just built a new PC and I am unable to load any operating system except DOS.
When loading Windows 98 2nd edition, setup stops after "Starting to copy files" & returns to the dos prompt, without copying anything.
Spec:-
ATX Motherboard
AMD Duron 750 chip
20gb Fujitsu HDD
128mb PC133 RAM
32 speed CD (not new)
All help appreciated.

You didn't say, but I assume you have a boot disk?

Hello David and welcome.
Could the disk you are using be damaged? Minor scratches can cause info loss and a loss of continuity in the load.
I have to go along with Jumby here and also ask, what is your proceedure?

I had the same problem on one system I built. After several tries, I finally copied all of files in the WIN98 folder of the CD to a directory on the hard drive, then ran Setup from the hard drive. If this works, another advantage is that you don't have to put in the CD when Windows needs to load software or drivers. More detail here (http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/software/windows/upgrade/inst98.htm).

I have tried to load both win98 & win2k from boot disk & direct from CD. The CD is brand new and the floppies have been OK up to now, but I will try new ones.

Thanks for reply reid
I did this after primarily loading DOS first once before. I eventually got the OS loaded but it fell over (Corrupt registry) everytime I loaded another program. I was advised that the HDD & then the memory was u/s so I have replaced it and have the same problem. I always copy the cab files to the HDD as this makes life much easier when windows shouts for the CD.
