I still love this site and it has been a great help. I am learning slowly. When I run system file checker under windows 98 SE I am missing files SM56DX3.DLL, SM56DX5.DLL, D3DRG16F.DLL, D3DRGBF.Dll, MOTVCD.VXD, and MSSCRIPT.OCX. I have found some missing files under WINN 98 and Drivers, now where do I find these files. How do you know where to look, where they come from, where they go, and where to find missing files. I have put together one computer so I have hardware down pretty good, where do I learn about software promblems and how to solve them? Like in windows 2000 how to disable start up programs? Thanks for the Help ANDY

On my system, Explorer Find File Tool could not find the SM56*.dll files you mentioned, and System File Checker did not complain about their being missing. I assume that they are not Windows 98 SE files

The System File Checker Utility provides an option of restoring files which are on the Windows 98 Install CD. I am surprised that it can identify missing files which cannot be restored from that CD. Perhaps it is smart enough to include drivers and dll files installed from some other CD, like the Graphics Adapter CD.

I am not sure about Windows ME, but Windows 98 SE includes msconfig, which is a configuration utility. If you found File Checker, msconfig is on the same menu. Msconfig has a Start Tab which provides a user friendly list of all programs started when Windows 98 SE loads. You can uncheck any program and it will not be invoked on the next Windows load. I have encountered a few anomalies with this. Once, I unchecked a program and discovered that some other program on the list started the one I had unchecked.

I think I read somewhere that Windows ME & perhaps XP are “dumbed down.” They try to make it difficult to find the guru utilities. Some utilities might not install unless you request custom install.

SFC by default keeps track of files in certain folders.....like Windows, Windows\System and a few others.

My question is....are there any problems on this machine? Are those files that are "missing" causing a problem?

SFC doesn't automatically update itself when you uninstall something, you have to update it, so if you uninstalled something that used one of those missing files it will be listed until you tell SFC to update the list.

This is the computer I built for my wife. I showed her how to use the windows tools to maintain it. She found them and asked me what they were and what to do about them, I did not know. Yes her computer works fine with out ant trouble. Hope to try peer to peer networking soon. Have the cards and cable installed alredy. But was trying to make sence out of the missing files. Thanks Andy
