Thanks Rick,
I was in C:\windows. Gee, do u think that made a difference?
I thought I was supposed to get smarter as time went on.....
again, thanks, I appreciate the help. I wanted to know because I have a mystry going on in Win ME's recycle bin. For some reason I can't see anything I put in the bin. But they are there. I can restore them or empty the bin. And it works, If I restore something it will put it back or confirm that I want to delete them if I opt to empty the bin.
Yet, when I open the recycle bin it says 0 folders 0 files. And you cant see anything there. In properties I do NOT have the box checked to immediatly delete... and I have gone to the folder options and made it so every type of file/folder can be seen, but that didn't work.
This has been going on for awhile. I ask around every now and then to see if someone else has had the same experience. Its a mystry to me.

It’s a mystery to me or should that be ME also. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Sorry couldn’t resist the pun
Have you installed any other software that is designed to recover deleted files or destroy files?
Like Norton wipe-file, unerase or delete protection ?

To get to the root directory just type CD\ and tap enter .
For more help with dos commands just type the command and put the help switch after it.
Cd /? Will display the options available . It also works with most other commands

I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone who knows all the commands and or options out of anything from microsoft . So being in c:\windows as the default is a MS problem.
When many/most dos commands are in c:\windows\command
By default any time you shell out of a program it will put you in the current folder /directory
of that drive and any other in use by the program or O/S

thanks again for the reply.
i just used CD.. to get to the root.
Most of my problem with DOS is that its been way to long since I have used it. The few commands I do remember I usually type in wrong.
For the hell of it I copied some of what was in the R bin to a floppy, just to be sure. And it copied fine. So I know that the items are in there.
Its really strange.
Someone gave me this to try:

this is how you repair the bin in dosmode for win98, maybe it's the same for me?
Deltree c:\recycled
Answer Y to confirm
Restart to DOS and enter Windows will rebuild the Recycle bin on restart.

At least they didn't tell mne to DEL*.*.
Then even if I did wipr out , It doesnt matter, I will be making that partition XP. I am goning to keep 98. ME has been the most UN-stable OS I have ever used.
I hope this can help you. Direct Deals has Win XP Pro for $158. Its 300 at the stores. Its the full ver OEM. But who cares if you don't get the book for $150. The home ver(full) is $107.
As u can see, I never did well with DOS, the way I type!!
And I wouldn't give up my day job for a future in stand-up
if I was you. :-)
Thanks again

Brian

The deltree will remove the R-bin
However depending upon the software installed and setting used for the R-bin Win 9x may not rebuild it . (using Nortons Unerase) after deleting the R-bin it doesn’t show up at all

Also I intend to keep my day job. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Good thing to. Computers are also a hobby for me .
I think the only thing I can type correctly are dos command.. Very short ones http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well, it looks as though it may remain a mystry for all of time.
I will get XP by next week, and then goodbye ME.
I don't use the Norton utilities as a rule of thumb. I think they cause more grief then anything. Or I should say I don't have any installed. I
Do use Ghost and some other that are on the Norton Sys Works Pro, Like WinFax. I did try the erase but it didn't find anything to restore.
If I ever find out I will post it.
Thanks again

Special knowledge relating to the recycle bin is built into Windows Explorer for 98SE, and is similarly built into the other flavors of Windows.

If you use a third party file manager instead of Windows Explorer, you will discover the following.

The Recycle Bin (Name: Recycled) contains a Desktop.ini file which is not shown by Explorer.
There is an info2 file containing control information. This file is not shown by Windows Explorer.
The deleted files have file names like DC0, DC1, et cetera instead of their actual names. Windows Explorer shows the original names of the deleted files.

The above makes me wonder what else is not as it seems in the various flavors of the Windows OS. For example, my Windows 98 SE system has 25 Desktop.ini files. Some are System & Hidden, some are just Hidden. These files are not displayed by Windows Explorer, although other system, hidden files are displayed (I have my view options set to show all files).

Desktop.ini are text files containing things like infotips (which you can edit), CLSID if it is a system folder, and special icons used for the folder.

The .dcx extension is used by recycle bin doesn't actually delete anything, that happens when you empty it...think of it this way, you have a trash can uin your office, you dump stuff in it ( it isn't really gone yet) periodically it gets dumped into something else and hauled away to the dump (oh...not very P.C. of me...I meant er, landf..er recycling center...er waste management facility)...basically, the same thing the old undelete used to when set for maximum safety.

All of this is because of the move from calling the groupings that you organize files into flolders as opposed to directories...someone somewhere conucted some sort of study and found that most people would rather not think about it ( I suppose that is how it happened )and hence folders that aren't directories and files that behave like folders...
