View Full Version : Dual OS running
I've heard that you can have two Operation systems on a pc. How do you do it? I would like to have Windows 98 and XP. I need to know how to run 98 when I want and run XP when I want. Thanks.

Not sure if XP will do this, but with Win2k if you installed it after 98 was already on your system, it gave you the option to set it up as a dual boot system, complete with a menu to choose which one you wanted to use.

How reliable is Win 2k? Will be using it for business and asp programming. Do I need to create space for it?

Buy an application called Partition Magic from PowerQuest. I think that version 7.0 is now available (I am using 6.0). 7.0 might be necessary for XP. I am running Windows 98, DOS 6.22, & Version 4 of OS/2 Warp.
It can create, move, & resize patitions. A program called Boot magic is included with it. Between the two of them, you can set up a Multi-OS System.
You should have a lot of Disk space before you try a Multi-OS system.
I have three hard drives and use a PowerQuest utility called Drive Image to do backups. I use the third drive to backup the important partitions on the other two drives.

I used Partition Magic when I installed winn 2000 along with 98 SE. I did not have to use boot magic because windows let me choose which system I wanted. If you install 2000 over 98 do not choose to upgrade. I also use partition magic to resize, change to fat 32. I had trouble with 2000 and 98 SE seeing the drives put win 2000 on fat 32 and you will see all drive letters. Let Partition Magic make your drive for winn 2000 active and set up for o/s. I love winn 2000, but takes long time to boot, I think it is better then 98 SE. It took a little while to understand 2000, it is some differant than 98SE. I run a small business and 2000 is better for my business. I hoped this helped and some day I will be a pro too, Thanks Andy I used 3 gigs for winn 2000, more than enough. I told you my mind is slow, you will have to load all your hardware as well in a dual system.
