I am running a dual boot system with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.01. While Ubuntu is apparently virus free, if I were to download a malicious file would it be possible to infect the Windows 7 side of the hard drive even though that operating system is not up and running? TIA,
The answer to that is a definite MAYBE.
It depends on a lot of things...like do you have WINE installed and do you have it set up to start Window's programs by double clicking on them, how you have you partitions separated (like is WINE linked to the Window's partition). What kind of file it is...
It's not common or easy, but the possibility does exist.

Actually, after I thought about it, I am not sure that I have actually created a dual boot system. I downloaded Ubuntu using Windows 7, burned a disc, then installed the program using Windows 7. No partition that I am aware of. I can also remove Ubuntu by using the windows uninstall program option. I called it dual boot because when I boot up the machine I have an option of running windows or Ubuntu. I am obviously a noob. The question again is am I jeopardizing my Windows 7 OS by downloading programs or files without the aid of an antivirus program? Thanks again for the response, G
