Do you know which update(s) is/are causing the issue?

If it's stopping when trying to update a .NET Framework update, go to this Microsoft page (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976982) and try running the Fix it shown at Method 1

The updates that are causing my problem are 1 for net framework and 9 for office 2003.they do however all have the same error code.the only thing different is the KB no
ran Fix it to no avail

Is it failing to download or failing to install? Watch what is doing from a right click on the update icon in the system tray to determine this.

A PITA but I suppose you could try downloading the relevant KB(s) from the Windows Downloads area and then attempt to install it/them manually.

no2like,

I've often found the .NET Framework updates can be a royal pain. I would suggest doing a Custom install of the updates and choosing only the Office 2003 ones (ensuring the .NET Framework update is unchecked).

If this doesn't work, I would go along with what Paul suggests above. It is a PITA, but leastways you'd be able to narrow it down to some rogue update that's not working properly.

tx first of all I don't know what a PITA is.now in checking the update history i find that this update has been installed nov 27.now why does the icon reappear all the time if that is the case

When MS update fails to install an update there can be a number of reasons for it. If it is a critical update or security matter then one should attempt to rectify things. If its not so critical then one can configue Windows Update so that it stops trying to download and update that file.

Do you have a MS MSKB reference for the download in question?
