Is there anyway to restore the ntoskrnl.exe file without having the installation disk? I'm running vista on a laptop.

When are you getting any particular (and what exact) message - presumably a "... is missing or corrupt ..." type of message? Also, have you made any recent hardware or software changes?

This can occur both when the file really is missing or corrupt or simply when the startup or windows processes have been disrupted for whatever reason so that the directions to the file are bad; it can sometimes be as simple as having a disk in the optical drive.

I'm sure you should be able to download an actual replacement from MS somewhere, but as I said it is just as likely to be there and be intact in the system32 Windows folder.

You might like to attempt a System Restore or a Startup Repair (from an F8 bootup option if it exists) or a full Vista Repair (http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html).

In earlier versions of Windows this could be caused by a faulty keyboard (http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000646.htm).
