I am getting ready to replace a laptop screen the Acer Aspire 7740-5691, and after removing the plastic frame and the actual screen I found a very small magnet with a piece of black tape on it. I have no idea where the magnet goes. The reason I am changing the screen, the laptop fell and the screen got broken, and the magnet probably became dislodge from somewhere behind the screen. If anyone can help me it will be greatly appreciate. I tried googling for info but came up empty.
Thanks in advance.
Are you sure it's a magnet and not something else...like half a ferrite choke to go around a cable...possibly the connection to the backlight or the inverter?

I am sure it is a magnet, the size is about 1/8" thick, 1/4" wide, and 1/2" long. It clings to any iron base metal. I very strong magnet for its size.
Thanks for your reply mjc.
Part of the latch, then?
Ferrite chokes can become magnetized, but they usually aren't very strong, and they are usually round, or cylindrical (or a torus/doughnut).

This part of the latch sounds right, I will just have to figure exactly where it was taped to.
Thanks mjc.

The magnet at the top is normally used to let the OS know when the lid is closed so that it can react to the various power settings. On Dell Inspirons it is usually beside the top left screw that holds the bevel in place.

Paul, thanks a lot, I could not figure just where this magnet goes. I will set it there and hope for the best. I am just waiting for the new screen that was ordered.
By the way, there are two screws at the left, is it the one at the corner or it goes between the two left screws.
Thanks

If you have the computer functioning and with the display wide open you could move the magnet along the front edge of the palmrest to see when the screen suspends. That should tell you when you are at the right spot. There should be a small daughterboard just under the palmrest at the appropriate place.

Great info Paul, thanks for the help. I will try and locate the spot later on today.
