I have a compaq presario 4565ES. I added another hard disk and am useing the old one for a slave. I had 48mb of ram. I replaced the old ram stick with 128m after I added the new hard drive. I installed win 98 se after formating both disk. It still say's I have 48mb of ram on my PC.
I also went in and made the slave disk "Virtual Memery" Should I have done this? How do I get my system to read the RAM? I did go to the BIOS and saved changes. What now? Thanks for any help you can give.
What is reporting only 48 meg?
System information ?
Windows Properties in device manager ?
Does the bios see and list all the ram?
Is there any other memory in the system other than the 128 meg stick?
Sorry I can’t give answers just more questions But the Compaq site doesn’t like me anymore .
So I can’t get much info from it.
Strange how they want the serial number for most things these days

Not sure if this could be the problem, but you may want to double check to see if your module is seated completely. Try taking it out and then putting it back in--making sure it is completely seated.

Im not sure if this will work on your computer but i have a compaq 7478 and this is what i had to do when i upgraded the memory:
go to start-run- then type msconfig in the box. This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Click on the Advanced button and you will see a line that says Limit Memory to xxx MB. Checkmark the box to the left, if it's not already checkmarked and scroll this number so that it is equal to or greater than the total amount of memory that you should have then hit OK then Apply and Reboot.
Good luck!

The " Limit memory size to... " is supposed to be a troubleshooting tool to identify possible problems with winodows OS; not to be used to tell a system how much memory it should/should not have.
You should never use this to set your system memory as you could cause a general page fault ( memory problems ) in Windows, instead you should just insert the largest/newest stick of RAM in your bank 0 ( or bank 1 ) on your motherboard ( this is usually the closest slot to the CPU ).
If your system has trouble recognizing the memory it's because; it's the wrong type/speed, the motherboard only supports a certain size of memory, it's a bad module and you should return it.
It's always a good idea to contact your manufacturer or read your Motherboard manual previously to purchasing memory. Crucial (http://www.crucial.com) has an excellant memory selection chart to assist you in %99 of memory selections.

iisbob may be right about "Limit memory size to.." as being used as a troubleshooting tool, but if that is currenty set to 48mb's, and the corresponding box is checked, then windows will not recognize the additional 128mg's you have installed, as far as i know. I changed it on my compaq and haven't experienced any problems. I would at least check to see what it is set to and investigate if necessary.

Presario 4565ES Minitower: A sleek, space-saving, network-ready minitower, the Presario 4565ES is great for multimedia labs, libraries or classrooms where space is a key consideration. With a footprint that is the size of a standard sheet of paper (8 ½" x 11"), the PC is small enough to fit on top of, or underneath, a school desk. Powerful, expandable and upgradeable, the Presario 4565ES, which includes a 233MHz AMD K-6 MMX enhanced processor, with a 14-inch (12.9-inch viewable) monitor.

Sorry 48MB is all that you can use in that PC 16MB non removeable and 32MB removable and only one slot for RAM http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
This is copied from crucial's memory selector
• Maximum Memory: 48MB
• Standard Memory: 32MB (16MB non-removable)
• Slots: 1 (1 bank of 1)
