Hello! I recently looked into building my own PC. I got all my parts ready to order, but before I do I wanted to be sure I'm prepared. I realized getting internet to my computer is going to be a major problem. The modem and router for my house are in my garage, which isn't connected to my house. This is because the garage was converted into a room for my older brother, who previously was the only person owning a desktop in our family, the rest of us having laptops.

The only ways we have determined internet could be made available for my room would be either buying a wireless card (expensive, don't have the money) or buying 200 feet of weatherproof ethernet cord to run outside from my garage to my house (also expensive)

I'm wondering if there are any other ways you guys know of to get internet into my room? We have a modem for our cable TV down in the actual house, but I have tried plugging an ethernet cord into that and get no internet, just a local connection. I don't have much experience with internet or how any of this really works so I just was hoping. I have a cable jack in my room for my TV, could I maybe just plug a modem into that? I have a spare modem from my brothers' house when they canceled their internet.

Thanks for any help you can provide, feel free to ask for clarification on anything I have said. My internet provider is Comcast.

I think you can afford one of these..... (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=570613&sku=N100-4067)

You could have Comcast move the modem from the garage into the house, it would cost you a truck roll but will result in the most reliable connection. You would use your brothers router with that modem, and can connect wired to the back of the router.
Or go wireless with an adapter from the brother's router, assuming the password is known.

Is your brother still living there?

Yes, those are your options...unless you can get Comcast to move the 'drop' to the house, instead of the garage...they may charge for that ($60 is what a friend paid recently to have his service drop moved...not Comcast, but I'd imagine that's the 'going rate').

Although, a wireless card would probably be your best bet (I think this one will be infinitely cheaper than 200+ feet of weatherproof cable...)

Thanks for all the responses!

I will certainly keep that in mind!

Yes indeed he is, so moving the modem into the house will solve my problem, but cause the same problem for his PC.

Thanks for the input, I will keep this in mind as well.

I just plugged the spare modem into the cable jack for my TV in my room, then ran an ethernet cord from the modem into my laptop and it worked! I think what I will do is buy a splitter, and use that to have cable and internet in my room. Thanks again for all the input, you guys have been helpful and if this solution doesn't work I will certainly try some of these.
