when i was trying to install something on my system, the message told me that my system was configured for windows 95-using american online 5.0
but i have windows 98 installed. why did it state that i was using win95?

Well, again ur question here is vague, what r u installing? does the installation procedure halt/quit bcos of this?

Because Windows 98 is part of the Windows95 family. Some installer programs will display your operating systems as Windows95.
