View Full Version : keep someone from using my pc
How do keep my nosy relatives from accessing Windows and/or the internet on my pc while they house sit for me? I have Windows Me, so they can easily access the internet by signing in as a guest with their own email addresses and passwords. Ideally, I'd like to prevent them from accessing Windows without a password. But when I tried to set this up, I noticed that the password can be bypassed by hitting 'cancel' or X. Please help! Thanks.

There is a way to do that to use the Windows password as "real protection". It's been a while since I read it but it involves editng the registry. The article was written about 18 months ago and should still be able to be found at ZDnet. A technically saavy person would probably be able to bypass it but most would give up. If I find the article I'll post back

Go to this Post Topic: windows 98 password security (http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/Forum15/HTML/000664.html) where we covered this topic extensively; in particular look for the two links i posted for some free security software-i recommend systemlock. The screensaver idea is a good one also.

Try this link, apparently you can use the windows logon, and disable the cancel feature, so that it will only access if you enter the correct password.

Neat tip, i've tried it myself but it still isnt as secure as a third party program or the NT kerenel based OS's ( 2000/NT/XP ).
If you read the fine print you'll notice that you can still by pass the logon screen by booting into either , safemode or hitting F8 at startup.
Unfortunatley in the Win9X kernel systems ther is just no inherent way to provide adequate security from any semi-PC literate person, ( this today includes most 9-12 year olds! ). Also if you read further ( and i can vouch for this ) there is stil some additionally reg tweaks you must perform upon all user accounts; existing or newly created.
It is still a good link, but for the average user it is un-recommended that you fool with the " brains " of your PC.
