Anyone here use FreeNAS?
http://www.freenas.org/

Looks good, and seems easy to get going - I am downloading the version 8 ISO now.

I will post back with results and opinion etc...

Reading about it, looks like it is out as it seems to be a RAM hog - 4GB MINIMUM, preferably 6GB or 8GB of RAM to help the ZFS filesystem along.

...and I used to think Windoze was a memory leach... ;)

Still interested to hear if any other members here use it and what their system specs and RAM are, but I think I will drop this as an option, as I would have to buy new hardware to be able to run it. :p

I haven't tried it but there are a number of open source solutions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network-attached_storage#Open_source_implementations) that you probably know about.

You might want to think about Ubuntu Server. It is console based (though a desktop can be installed later if so desired but would require much more resources) and includes both FTP and SSH servers amongs its server applications.
