Can anyone direct me to a source of a demagnetizing tool? I’ve not seen any at PC hardware vendors’ sites …… I wonder why…. maybe I just haven’t looked at the right ones.

Googled these:
http://www.wihatools.com/481seri.htm http://www.micro-tools.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=MT&Product_Code=40010
but do they work?

Re using nonmagnetic screwdrivers:……… What trick / tip have you for starting those pesky buggers that must be inserted through holes in the back of the case and into a drive. My arms get tired while holding the case over my head and turning the screwdriver with my mouth.

Clueless not screwless ……yer fixrupr

Hehe...lol...

I know I probably should, but I don't worry about it, the small magnetic field on one of those screwdrivers isn't really going to do in a drive (maybe if you let it sit on top of it for a while)...

The thought of using magnetized stuff around computers gives me the creeps, so I use this (http://www.sears.com/sr/product/) type of screw holder. I don't remember where I got mine (Jensen, maybe, but I didn't see them at their online store), but I've got different lengths and Phillips also.
Edit: I've lost patience trying to paste the link. Go to sears (Craftsman)tools > general hand tool > specialty screw drivers.
"Craftsman 5-5/8 in. Screw starter starts most standard screws with 15 in. lb. torque."

Wrapping some tape works, too.

The Wiha looks like it would work great. I've got a square loop made by Bondhus that accepts a wide range of tools (as in: hex wrenches for machine tools). I don't see it at Bondhus' site under products, so maybe it's no longer in production. Actually does magnetize, then demagnetize.

PS: I think you meant degaussing, but that involves using electrical coils.

Isn't the end of that screw starter a magnet?

I also have one of these.
Great little item

The magnetizer I was thinking of is actually a Wiha (http://www.niftech.com/pix/cat/3015.jpg).

I have screw starters similar to these (http://www.setools.com/sk-frame.html). Mine have magnets on the end opposite the "business end" so you can pick up the screw after it drops ( http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif). The tips are split and spring loaded, releasing when some torque occurs in a clockwise direction.

Sorry about the crummy photos, but: have a look (http://www.engineeringfindings.com/cat21/p328.pdf).

I don't care for this style (http://www.engineeringfindings.com/cat21/p327.pdf) because it requires too much side clearance.

(Gotta do stuff before my cable gets disconnected, see y'all!)

Fixrupr,

Saw the problem immediately...you had the right idea! Screwdriver in mouth, however, rotate the case not the screwdriver ...much easier! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif Hope this helps!

Whyzman,
I think that there is a distinct possibility that you are not being entirely sincere with me on that tip. But ya might be on to something anyhow. If I hooked up some bungie cords from the case to the…… hmmmmmmm rafters …………hmmmm………….
Yep! It’ll save wear & tear on the old pearlys too

Thanks! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Fixrupr,

I've been doing it that way for quite a while now! I've got biceps like Arnold S. and my face doesn't look all screwed up like the bitter beer commercial guys! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif And, you're right , my dentist approves! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Now swinging from the rafters seems plausible to me...Just don't let my wife find out...She may want me doing that all the time...Don't know if my arms could handle the strain.
