A good friend got a gift of a chrome "designer" ps/2 mouse but his existing mouse is a serial mouse. He bought a ps/2 to serial adapter and plugged it in but Windows 95 doesn't recognize it. I haven't been able to get it recognized or to function. I'm a novice too. Any help?

If you have the disk that came with the mouse it has the driver on it this needs to be installed do you have any conflicts in the device MGR.if you have done the stuff above then boot into safe mode and attempt to move the mouse,(IF) it works in safe mode::Then click start/settings/control panel/system/click device mgr. in dev.mgr. click the "+" by the mouse if not already a "-" this should show all mice devices that are installed.Remove all mice's that are listed. Re-boot the puter normally into windows. it should be working. if not then post back with exactly what you've done so far and we'll try something else.

Hope you are not plugging/unplugging this mouse while the PC power is on. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

USB devices OK. Serial Port and ps/2 devices while power is on is a no-no.

My friend was on vacation so I couldn't inquire about the disc for the new mouse. IT DIDN'T COME WITH ONE!!!!. What next?

If he's using the serial adapter it should recognize the mouse as a normal serial mouselike he's been using. Does he have ps/2 ports?

Try the suggestion above and boot into safemode removing all instances of mouse from the device manager, then while the system is of hook up the mouse with the adapter back to the serial port and reboot-this should force windows to recognize the mouse.

If you still have no luck try this page; generic drivers (http://www.amptron.com/html/drivers8.html) and look all the way at the bottom.
