Can anyone recommend a setting for the [Vcache] in my system.ini?

The machine I'm runnin on only has 64MB of RAM.

Thanks.

The best thing you can do for your system is get another stick of 64mb's of memory-or better yet just buy a 128mb stick, they're not that expensive any more ( around $20 US ), this'll do more for your system's performance than all the tweaking in the world.

Haha, this I know iisbob. I have 768mb at home, but unfortunately, I'm at work and don't have that option. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

So, I must leave it to tweaking. Also, I have limited net access, so if you have any links to any web sites or anything, possibly post the info here, or send the links to my email. <fraelorn@hotmail.com>

Thanks again..

Just not a whole lot you can do to improve that system sticking to 64mb's with most modern apps.

I remember when 64mb's was considered outrageous! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif Funny i should look down on it now. LOL!!

Try setting your virtual mem to 3X that of your current memory ( ie 192 ), using that as the max with no minimum. Also place this line in your system.ini file under the [386Enh] heading;

ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1

This will force windows to try to use all available RAM before it uses the virtual memory-thus letting your most used apps run a little better.

What ever you do, don't disable the virtual memory in that system with less than 256mb's of RAM! it could possibly lockup continously.

That's about all i can think of at the moment. Hang around and possibly some of the other guru's will swing in with some other tips.

I'm running a high end email support program and it drops my resources from 70% to around 50.

Need to tweak this thing till I can get a different machine.

Thanks, is much appreciated.

Hey,

To answer your original question, do the following:

Edit the system.ini file. Under the [Vcache] section, add the following lines exactly as they appear below:

MinFileCache=8192
MaxFileCache=16384

Ok, so now you ask, how did I arrive at those numbers? I use the Vcache statements on all three of my computers running WIN98SE with absolutely no problems.

Anyway, it's generally recommended that the minimum setting be set to 1/8 of available physical RAM and the maximum set to 1/4 of available physical RAM, expressed in kilobytes. Remember that one megabyte equals 1,024 kilobytes, but don't use commas in the command line.

Good luck.
