I NEED TO CONFIGURE A USB PORT AS A COM PORT TO CONNECT A LAPTOP TO AN INMARSAT M SATPHONE RECIEVER. THE SAT PHONE REQUIRES A SERIAL CONNECTION TO A LOW SPEED MODEM (14.4) THE LAPTOP IN USE DOESN'T HAVE A SERIAL PORT AND WIN98 WON'T LET ME INSTALL A STANDARD MODEM TO A USB PORT. ANY IDEAS?

uhhhh......let me get this straight, you want to connect a 14.4 modem to a USB port?

You'll need a USB modem...and they come in 56k flavors or better. I can't think of any way to use a standard serial modem with a USB connection.

What are your options on the laptop?

I think you just need a USB to Serial Adapter (http://www.usbgear.com/usa/item_288.html), then a 9600 bps connection needs to be set up on the laptop, with the INMARSAT phone acting as a modem.

This link (http://www.eikmail.com/m4/Eik_Internet_Inm_M.htm) has detailed setup steps (but your ISP access number will be different, of course.) You can find other information by doing a Google (http://www.google.com) search with inmarsat serial port.

Hello Dutch and welcome,
Does this laptop have a PCMCIA slot? If so, you can get a card for a Serial port, or as Reid said, a USB-to-Serial.
As far as Win98 not allowing you to install a modem to a USB, the do make USB external modems, but I think you would be better off with the PCMCIA card and Serial connection.
