I just installed a new motherboard and processor in my system, and when I first booted it up the cdrom and the harddrives worked fine, until windows did all of its updates. In the device manager it does not list a cdrom driver, nor does the cdrom show up on the "my computer" window. The BIOS will find the cdrom on boot up. The hard drives are two older types, less than 1M each, could this be causing a controller problem? I am going to look in the config.sys to see if there are any conflicts. Please help, my wife needs the cd to play her games with.

When you say the CDROM worked fine when you first booted, did it actually read CDs or did it just appear in the BIOS? What Windows updates do you mean? Did you reinstall Windows using the CDROM after you replaced the motherboard?
Without more information to go on anything I suggest is just guessing, but here are some things to check:
Be sure the hard drives and CDROM are jumpered correctly. Are you using the same master/slave configurations as you were on the old motherboard? If so, especially check the ribbon cable to the CDROM to be sure it's oriented to pin 1 correctly. The hard drives are apparently being recognized OK, so be sure the cable to the CDROM isn't reversed. I doubt the age or size of the hard drives is causing a controller problem if they're both being recognized, but it would help to know how they're installed (i.e., Drive 1 Master on IDE 1, Drive 2 Slave on IDE 1, CDROM Master on IDE 2, or whatever, and their positions on the ribbon cable).
Be sure IDE 2 controller is enabled in the BIOS setup.
What is the brand and age of the CDROM? Some old CDROMs need to have drivers loaded in autoexec.bat and config.sys for them to be recognized in Windows.
If you're running Win98, does the CDROM work when you boot to the startup floppy and start with CDROM support?
Please post back with more info on your system and we'll be glad to try to help you figure this out... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

If you swapped motherboards without formatting the C drive and reinstalling Windows, that's the majority of your problem. It's a nuisance, but when changing motherboards it's always best to format/reinstall. The new motherboard requires a different set of drivers than the old one, and often the leftovers cause problems.
The CD ROM problem may or may not be related, I would boot to Safe Mode using the [F8] key and remove all instances of CD ROM drives from Device Manager, shut down and physically remove the CD ROM, (unplug the ribbon cable from the back of the drive), reboot and let windows load, shut down again and reinstall the CD ROM drive, and let Windows find and install it again.

If you had everything...Where would you put it?
