Please excuse my ignorance....
Two questions
1) I'm replacing a 466 celeron w/a 850 on an OEM board(810 chipset)& I know there is a difference in voltage requirements for the two. Do I need to make a change somewhere? Some of my reading led me to believe it would adjust itself????
2) Where does this ole man plug the cpu fan (3-wire) in? The 466 was heat sink only. Is there an indicated place on the motherboard. I bought the machine thru an auction site and do not have any documentation on the board. A bios string search indicated it was a board manufactured by some outfit called QVC. I found what appears to be the board on their site, bcmcom.com, but I'm really not 100% sure. Which raises a question regarding flashing the BIOS, but I have used up my two questions already. Thanks for any help offered.......

Hello Grayhair and Welcome,
Well, it sounds like you are trying to do your research and coming up empty. At this site that you think you found your board on, can you download a manule? Are there any other identifying numbers on the board.
If you are as old and gray as you make it sound http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif , you may need your thick glasses for this. Take a good look at the lableing on the mobo around any jumbers or pinsets. There should be a couple that say "Fan."
Any more system info would help us.
Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Thanks for your reply,
There are no more numbers on the board (other than the serial #) that provides me with any clue as the to what specific board I have. I did a MOBO search using the bios string, and it came back GVC. I went to their site @ bcmcom.com-sorry I don't know how to "link" this site- and found a page with pictures of their boards. It appears to be the IN810P, but the geometry of the chip is different, as far as placement on the board. Mine is set square to the sides of the board, the pictured board has it 45'd to the edge. My concern has to do whether the bios will support the 850, and what version it is, though the bios chip had a 1.05 sticker on it, which is the latest version listed on their site. I think I will just install it and see what speed it runs at. Because I don 't know for sure what I have, I will leave the bios alone- I don't need to make a door stop out of the machine....I appreciate you time, and yes, I had to use a magnifying glass and found the fan plug in. Help.......
I'm lost........installed the new CPU (850 celeron). System fans & lights came on, but it would not boot, and blank screen. Re-installed old CPU (466), and I'm back in business. The only clue I have come across is that this processor requires a "split plane motherboard", and I now believe that mine is not. Unable to make positive ID on my OEM board- I know, never buy OEM. The BIOS string indicates a GVC/BCM board, but their site does not show my specific board. Is it new motherboard time? Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks

Hello Grayhair,
That would be a wise choice. I think the battle you are into is unwinnable http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif . There are a lot of decent priced boards out that will handle that CPU, so do a little research and find what suits your needs best.
Good luck

From one greyhair to another,

Computergeeks.com is reputable, and they have a brand new Biostar mb for $30 for your celeron 850. Though the listed board is unknown to me, I have built several machines using both Biostar and computergeeks,

compgeeks.com/ (http://www.compgeeks.com/)

If that doesn’t suit, try this BOT

pricewatch.com/ (http://www.pricewatch.com/)
