I had updated Internet Explorer 5 with an IE5 update. Due to some problems, I require to reinstall the IE. When I use the same disk by which I had updated Internet Explorer 5 with an IE5 update. Due to some problems, I require to reinstall the IE. When I use the same disk by which I installed IE 5 program, the system refuses to install it with a message that a more recent version is already in the system and hence cannot be updated.

Under such conditions, how do I reinstall the internet explorer.

What is the function of 'Setup.exe' file located in C:\Program files\Internet explorer\setup. Will it reinstall the internet explorer which I had last installed in my computer including the update?

If I understand correctly you are trying to go back to an older version of IE and Windows will not let you. This is no surprise.

Either go for the most recent version of IE

or

Try this

Control Panel/Add Remove Programs/IE and then you should get options - first try repair.

Indecision may or may not be my problem

As i understand U want to reinstall IE5 over IE5, but as per my knowledge IE4 or earlier version of IE cannot be reloaded, if there already loaded with IE4 or earlier, U have to RUN SETUP.EXE program again from IE setup program from which can get three option INSTALL, REPAIR, REMOVE. I shold recommened for ur problem u should run the repair option first i think it will solve u, other wise u need to remove IE then need to install it again.

pscraja1: There was a recent post here where someone successfully removed IE (through Add/Remove), and then installed it again. I agree that you should try the "repair option" first though. MSKB article on IE repair tool (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q194177)

My understanding is that you have a CD with the complete IE plus installer for putting it back, but if not, Here (http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/support/win95/msiexpl.html) are several versions of IE with the installers so that you don't need to be online to install.

I've had similar probs. what has happened is that the IE5 update has 'updated' IE5 (let's call this IE5 plus.) When you try to install IE5 (original) it finds some of the files for the plus version and recognises this as a later version, & refuses to install.

Try repair first, if unsuccessful then try uninstall/reinstall.

Probably easier though to go for later version (IE6) which should overwrite the original.
