One M/c with 600Mhz Cyrix Processor 128MB RAM 20GB HDD. That M/c hangs whenever it running scandisk, But running scandisk after disabling VIRTAL MEMORY it is running fine & perfectly. Try the HDD in another M/c it resulted the same. Low Level that SEAGATE HDD, will it be solve now?

I take it you checked for running programs in the background? If not, makes sure there is nothing running in the background!

How far into scanning your HD does it fall over (%)?

Thanx 4 ur reply, there is nothing running in background, it still hangs, after a try to check the system area. As well i think it is enough (128MB) memory is there to run Win'98.

Try defraging the drive to see if an error message appears while defraging. If no message appears then try a scandisk again.

If an error message appears (somthing like "Cannot defrag due to errors) try running scandisk is Dos mode (restart machine - you may need a Startup disk)!

Lets see what happens!

Also you can try deleting Win386.swp from DOS and then rebooting (Windows will recreate it when you reboot)....that is the swafile (virtual memory) and sometimes it does get corrupted or the is a bad sector in the area of the drive it is on........
