Found this little bit of info on pcgiude
"In addition, motherboards with integrated video are notoriously difficult to upgrade. Many that have an option (via jumper or BIOS setting) to disable the on-board video actually still have problems with an add-in upgrade video card, and many come with no ability to disable the built-in video at all!"

this is the mobo that i am working with. http://www.pcchips.com.tw/M598LMR.html

Can I put in a pci video card? I'm not the brightest star in the sky, but with good instuctions I can usually figure things out.

Don’t give up all hope.
Many of the on board video will automatically be disabled when you install a new video card.
The connect the monitor to the new card and boot up.
You should check your bios for a setting to disable the onboard video before you begin.

If it has the disable feature then use it. when you save and exit .
Shut the power off before it is able to reboot.

Install the new card. connect the monitor and boot it up.

Another question before I can get going on this. I have to move things around in the box to make room for the PCI card. Where the moniter is connected, there is a very short cable connected to the mother board. Can I take this out? Seems if I'm putting in a new card I wouldn't need it, but I'm not sure.

Not knowing exactly what the small cable is.
I’d have to say Leave it connected.
It may be a power cord for the Heatsink Fan..

If you remove it and it is the power for a fan You can burn out your cpu.

The Onboard Video card should be wired directly and should have No others wires or cables to disable it.

Ok so i got the new card in, Now when I try to install the drivers for it , it gives me a warning that they are not the right ones. I downloaded the updated drivers, and I also tried the disk that came with the card. Neither work. Now what?

Hey Donna here's some steps i use on Compaq & HP's when i've upgraded them for people and they have intergrated video.

1st go into device manager and click the "disable this item in this hardware profile " box, 2nd go to add/remove programs and uninstall their current vid drivers. 3rd shutdown the system and insert the PCI vid card, then when i boot back up- i go into the BIOS and see if i can disable or lower their video memory requirements, then after booting back into windows, when it discovers the new vid card i install the drivers.

So far this has worked 99% of the time, if you get driver install problems, boot into safe mode and remove all video card entries from the device manager-exceptr for the intergrated one, just make sure it is still checked " disabled ".

Give me a yell or post back on your results. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
