I have just loaded Windows 98 and Windows 2000 onto two partions on an IDE drive: C: = 98
D: = 2000

If I choose to go into (D drive) Windows 2000, all loads fine.
If I choose the (C drive) Windows 98, it sends me to DOS screen that says I am missing these files:
D:\Windows\HIMEN.sys
D:\Windows\DBLBUFF.sys
D:\Windows\IFSHLP.sys
WIN.COM
In DOS, I typed help and it told me that I had "no extended memory driver" and that to make sure HIMEN.SYS was on the disk - then to restart using command prompt only and not SAFE MODE. Then it said that I may need to add a line: Maybe DEVICE=A:HIMEN.SYS or
DEVICE=C:\Windows\Himen.sys in the config.sys on boot drive.

If 2000 - the D drive - is working fine, why is it saying that the files are missing or corrupted? My problem is that I'm learning and I don't know how to act on that information. I don't know where to find or how to add the lines. Could someone walk me through it?

Thanks, Thomas

Sounds like your Win98 install thinks it should be running from the D: drive, but it's startup files aren't there since D: is actually Win2k.

Proper install order for a multi-boot:
Win98 - format only PART of the drive as FAT32.
Win2k - format the rest of the drive as NTFS.

I'd guess that the Win9x install is hosed. You can wipe the entire thing and start fresh, or just try to install Win9x again. When you do that, it will hose the multi-boot (you won't be able to select to boot into Win2k anymore). To fix that, just boot from the Win2k CD and select to repair an existing install, and fix the boot environment. Should be all set.

I would check your Boot.ini file first.( start Windows2000 amd make sure you can see hidden files. This file is read only so you'll have to change that in the file's Properties first. Also it's located at the root of the C drive)
There should be a line at the bottom that tells the system where "windows" is located. ( example If the line reads D:\="windows 95" change it to C:\="windows 95") and reboot. You should now be able to access both of your operating systems.( don't worry if the line reads 95 instead of 98 it makes no difference)

Warning DO NOT CHANGE ANY OTHER LINE IN THIS FILE as doing so could cause WIN2000 to fail to boot

Oh.... Make sure to check all your startup files (autoexec.bat, config.sys....) for any entries that point to the D drive.

Since your d drive is now NTFS ( I'll assume, but we all know what happens when you assume http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif ) Windwos 98 won't be able to access any file on that drive without 3rd party programs.

also when make a dual boot system. I would leave the C drive (system partion) formatted in FAT. If you format the c drive in FAT32 you may have problems booting Windows NT/2000.

Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
