Hello!
:-)
I have a machine that boots from a HDD that was SYS-ed from Win95b emergency restart disk(FAT32, DOS 7).
I want to get rid of the Windows 95 startup screen that is visable while command.com and io.sys are loading, and while autoexec.bat and/or config.sys are being processed.
I note that you can clear this screen by pressing [ESC] while this screen is visable. Is there anyway to issue an [ESC] key command to trick the screen into going away?
Ta!

Welcome to the PC Guide Forum
Open my computer or Windows Explorer go to the root of your C drive in the view menu tick the box to show all files and look for a file named logo.sys right click it and rename it to logo.old. this should solve your problem. there is also an image similar to this one embeded in io.sys Don't attempt to edit this file mess up io.sys and you will have a computer that won't boot. If you want to have some fun change logo.sys to logo.bmp and open it in a graphics program and edit it but don,t change the color depth, format, or size, when you are done editing it save it close it and go back to windows explorer and change it back to logo.sys. Also in your windows or windows\system directory you will find logow.sys (windows splash screen) and logos.sys (windows shut down screen) you can edit these also. before editing any of these you should make copies of them so you can restore them if you want. Be careful with the last two because they can cause windows to hang on startup and shutdown if they are in the wrong format or color depth. this is only for Win 95, 98, and 98SE Windows ME and XP doesen't have these files.

AHHH!!!
Just as I suspected - a copy of this image is imbedded in IO.SYS.
Thanks for your help, and this is GREAT info for those wanting to change the startup screeen when you are booting into Windows, but I am not...
I use the E-boot disk from Win95b, to get a raw DOS that is FAT32, so that with a little HDD software, I can access ALL 20GB of my Seagate HDD as ONE PARTITION. You cannot do this with DOS 5 or DOS 6.22
(you can use all the space by diving the 20GB into 10 2GB partitions, of course, but one bloody-huge bootable partition is preferable...)
So now that I have confirmation that a copy of the boot-screen is embedded in IO.SYS, do you or anyone else have any ideas on how to get rid of it?
Anyone know a site with a hack for this or something?
It just dosen't sorta look right too see the Windows95 boot-up screen if you're not actually loading it!!!!

Get yourself a copy of Tweak UI (http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp) and you can turn off the startup logo among other things. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
