No, virus cannot affect the hardware itself (at least not yet). Of course they can affect the performance of the hardware by messing with software

That's kindof a gray area because there are boot virii that will delete or overwrite your BIOS settings; therefore rendering your hardware ( the total system ) unusable! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
So you could say that they affect the hardware, not directly as in scratching or burning it, but indirectly as in causing it to be unusable.
Some of the more recent virulent ones are getting to the point where they literally will destroy your BIOS/CMOS chip-causing a buffer overflow that disables it's ability to hold a set amount of data{ memory }. In these cases you'll have to replace the actual BIOS chip-kinda the same effect if you did a bad BIOS flash update.

What are some of the viruses that can do this, can you get it throught browsing, and or email. Or does the virus have to manually be put on your cpu with like a floppy in dos.?
