Is it possible to disable the compaq logo that is seen at bootup so that i can see what is happening when my computer is booting such as the memory test? I tried using tweakui to do this but it only disabled the windows98 splash screen. I have a compaq 7478 if it matters. I think i read one time that the logo is part of the bios.

..I think i read one time that the logo is part of the bios..
You read correctly jeffhhh-it's part of their ( and other venders ) deal when purchasing a BIOS from a standard vendor such as Award or AMI.
The only way i know of to disable that would be to flash your BIOS with a reference version for your board ( good luck finding one http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif ). Since Compaq uses a proprietory motherboard vender ( Camaro ) you'll have almost %100 no-luck finding a similar config to use.
Seems to me that i did read a compaq forum response once where an individual said he had found one; but he never gave any details.
Try a google search for BIOS editors-it's always possible that you may find something.

Hey,
I know with other vendors' splash screens, pressing either Esc or Tab will get rid of the splash screen. Not sure about Compaqs, but it's worth a shot. As soon as the splash shows up, try one of the keys mentioned.
Post back if that works. I'm curious. Or, Sea69 should know. He has a Compaq.
How about it Sea?

I tried pressing tab, then escape, neither one works. It just gives me a line at the bottom of the screen that says i can hit f10 so fo into setup. I don't want to flash the bios. Its not that important. Maybe sea69 has figured it out.
I also read somewhere that pressing escape or tab would get rid of it. It just doesnt work on my computer.
I was also wondering if anyone has figured out how to get into the bios screen, not just the cheesey bios setup. Do you know sea69?

hi,
when booting my 7ap140 compaq if I press the "Esc" button when the compaq red insignia pops up, I see the standard boot info that is seen on any other machine. 640, ram is shadowed.. blabla bla.......
Then it does say at the bottom that you can press F10 to get into BIOS.
After that- you get an additional (white lettering on a black background) that gives you other choices. One of these is an extended BIOS screen. Which gives me a more complete BIOS menu.
As for the red Compaq insignia, I seem to remember a way to also replace that with whatever you like including an insignia of your own making.
I will look to see if I can find it.

Thanks for the info sea69.
Don't worry about spending time finding a method to change the insignia. I'm mainly interested in getting rid of it so i can "watch" the computer boot up. I haven't figured that out yet or the bios part.

the thing is, upon more investigating I have found that it is highly unlikely that the Compaq logo can be removed. It is part of the system BIOS, and compaq's not making a flash to get rid of their own logo anytime soon.

as for the "watching it boot up" part, this happens so fast with the new AMD processors that you really can't see it happening. (at least on mine)... I found that by pressing the "Esc" key immediately after hitting the power button you can see where the info is, but not it actually occuring.

In the BIOS look for an option that is something like "Boot diagnostics enabled"...not all computers have that op[tion, but if it does that should disable the splash screen....

I tried hitting escape again and got the boot information to come up one time but couldn't get it again after several tries. Sea69...what is the precise time you hit escape, when the logo 1st appears or sometime before that?
I didn't see anything about boot diagnostics but while I was in bios setup, I changed from quickboot to full boot and it would show the memory test slowly above the compaq logo, but i had to change it back to quickboot because it was booting too slow.
I think the menu came up next giving me the option to go into safe mode or windows98 or DOS. I don't remember it it had a bios option.
