hi all, has anyone any idea's, I switched my PC on today and it won't defrag.
every time I try to defrag it, it comes up with locked by disk utility. As far as I'm aware I haven't locked anything.
I am running windows 98.

There could be a program loaded in memory that might cause this.
You can try to defrag in safe mode.
As a last resort you can also try the unlock command from DOS.
I tried from a DOS window and got the error "Locking operation failed".
Might work in real DOS mode though.
For more info on the lock/unlock commands, type: lock /? or unlock /? at the DOS prompt.

Hey,
Running defrag in Safe Mode is a good idea. Otherwise, in Normal mode, press Ctrl,Alt,Del ONCE. Hightlight each program EXCEPT Explorer and SysTray and choose to End Task. Then try running defrag again.
Good luck.

Hi BigBlue66, I still get locked by disk utility, I just
can't figure this out. I haven't locked anything I wouldn't have a clue
anyway. why on earth would anybody want to in the first place.
seems strange.

Mark-
do control, alt, delete and close everything out except explorer.
then run defragg.
but BEFORE you do that, go get and install winME defrag-here (http://www.homestead.com/Scotterpops/Files/downloads/winme_defrag.zip)
it is 300% faster then win9x defrag and will not stall or restart.

Disk locking error
When running defrag receive error "Windows cannot defrag drive because it has been locked by a disk utility. Quit any utilities that may have locked the drive and try defrag again."
This is caused when other applications are running in the background modifying data that is trying to be moved by defrag. To resolve the issue close out of all TSR's running on the computer. And hopefuly that is not a third party lock disk.
another thing is do you have enough free memory to defrag

Hey Mark,
ME's defrag should be OK to use in 98. After all, both the defrags do nothing but move your data around so it's easier for the computer to find it. And besides that, ME is just 98 with a few more bells and whistles and annoyances. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Closing out Systray is an excellent idea. That may catch underlying programs that are not seen in the Close Program dialog box. Nice one, Sea.
Good luck. Post back with your progress.

it if VERY SAFE, it renames your old defrag to "old", it is still there.. instructions (read me) is there as well.
I put it on every win9x machine I get on.
It is not 3rd party, it is Micro$haft
