I've just acquired an old PC with a 5-1/4 inch floppy drive, and it came with all of the MS-DOS floppies from ver 1 through 6.22.

Is DOS worth anything?

When I first got there, the system was running Win98SE with network, so we shared the floppy drive and just drag-n-drop the files to folders on a thumb drive via a newer machine.

I don't think that will work, so how can I copy all the files and get them preserved so they could be installed in a USB or CD drive?

The owner was uber paranoid so wanted to format the old beast, so we ran fdisk and it's done.

One interesting point, 30 year old floppy still seem to work great!

It would be interesting just to have on hand. In those days that computer was awesome. The first computer that I use was in 1983. It was a KayPro with two 5 1/4 inch drive.

DOS is good for running old games, DOS games and if you have the original Windows 3.xx floppies (as well as the DOS games), you can install them on this PC.

You are wanting to copy the floppy disks? I used this (http://download.cnet.com/Floppy-Image/3000-2242_4-10053170.html) awhile back for a particular need to make images of some floppies and it worked fine. If I remember correctly it supports the old 5 1/4's. 14 day trial. You can likely find a freebie, but I didn't have time to search for one and I only needed it for a short time.

There is a free virtual floppy drive (http://sourceforge.net/projects/vfd/) to mount the images on as well.
