I have two SCSI cards that need to be replace on a intel JN44OBX MOBO with PIII 450, 128 MB SDRAM, Phoenix BIOS 4.0 Running WinNT4.0 on a network. My question is how do I know if the cards are PnP? I know that NT supports only some PnP devices. Should I just slap the cards in and fire it up? Or is there something else I should conisder first? The cards are exactly the same as the ones they are replacing. I was not present at the first install of the SCSI cards and this is the first ones I've had go bad. Any comments welcome. Also the cards are some Generic brand(government work) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif I will contiue to look for more info on them.

The Hardware Compatibility List (http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/server/howtobuy/upgrading/compat/default.asp) might not be a bad idea...
Best I can tell you is try them and see, I would install the OS then add the cards, see if it recognizes them. If so, you're in good shape. If not, shut down and remove them. NT is not the greatest with PnP, and I'm not familiar enough with it to know how it will handle specific components.
Hopefully between that and the links already posted you'll be in good shape.

As Pete stated NT is not truely " plug&play", however most times it will recognize most hardware on the HCL-and since ADAPTEC is a major manufacturere of SCSI components , you should have no problems with it recognizing it. You can also use the SCSI adapter control panel option to manually load the drivers for the cards. I would configure the controller card first, then ( with power off ) hook up your device(s) and make sure it ( or they ) are terminated properly-then reboot, if you've got them set up correctly you should have NT detect them right off the bat and be able to install your drivers.
SCSI is such fun to work with, especially on a server at midnight on a friday night. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
